The Civil War between the North and South in the United States of America was fought between 1861 and 1865. The Union, or the Northernmost part of America fought against the Confederate States of America. This war was between the North and South because of sectional differences and different wants of the separate parts of the country. The North wanted and needed different things than the South. Dating up to the emergence of political parties after George Washington's presidency, there were big differences between the North and South. Many people, including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington had seen that there was going to be a division between the two separate parts of America. Many things caused the war but Lincoln being elected in 1860 was the last straw for southerners; this meant war for them and in January of 1861 South Carolina succeeded from the Union. The attacks began at Fort Sumter on the 12th of April. After this battle more states joined the Confederacy. There was a huge split in the country and the war lasted until 1865. During these years there were many battles, President Lincoln was assassinated, and eventually the Union regained control and the Confederacy surrendered. Even though the war was over, there would be a lasting impact of the Civil War on the United States even up to present day.
